Welcome to the United Kingdom Metaplastic Breast Cancer Community
Welcome to the United Kingdom
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, known as the UK, is composed of four separate countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The UK is a constitutional monarchy, Queen Elizabeth 11 is the current monarch and has reigned since 1952. You may find Welsh spoken in Wales; Gaelic in parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland and even Cornish in Cornwall all of these being a Celtic language but English is the main spoken language. London is the capital of the UK.
The more we engage globally the more we prosper.

United Kingdom Healthcare
The National Health Service (NHS) was launched In Manchester, England in 1948. Then, for the first time, hospitals, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, opticians and dentists were brought together to provide services for free at the point of delivery. There have been a number of reorganisations over the years but the provision of services remains free. Funding for the NHS comes directly from taxation.
One of the core principles of the NHS is that good healthcare should be available to all, regardless of wealth. The exceptions are some charges, such as prescriptions, optical services and dental services.
Organisationally the NHS provision in the UK is managed regionally as: NHS England, NHS Northern Ireland, NHS Scotland and NHS Wales. The provision of services remains free at the point of use for all UK residents. This currently stands at more than 64.6 million people in the UK and 54.3 million people in England alone.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) produces guidance (advice) for the NHS about preventing, diagnosing and treating medical conditions. The guidance is written by independent experts, including healthcare professionals and people representing patients and carers. They consider the evidence on the disease and treatments, the views of patients and carers and the experiences of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals, and consider the costs involved.
Staff working in the NHS are expected to follow this guidance. For a rare cancer like Metaplastic Breast Cancer this might create problems in terms of choosing treatment options as NICE does not separate MbBC from Triple Negative Breast Cancer.
